I watched England defeat Bulgaria 4-0 yesterday in our first qualifying match for Euro 2012. Jermaine Defoe scored an excellent hat-trick and Andy Johnson scored his first competitive goal in an English shirt. All in all, it was an enjoyable victory and the perfect start to England’s qualifying campaign.
I would have enjoyed the game even more if Wayne Rooney had scored. Of course I was supporting the whole English team, but it seemed like I was supporting the Manchester United players even more. In addition to Wayne Rooney, the other player from Manchester United was Michael Carrick, but he didn’t play last night.
Rooney played very well, and created three of the four goals. It was difficult for him to score last night because the England manager, Fabio Capello, had asked him to play a deeper role (in front of the England midfield players). I think he can become an excellent attacking midfielder/second striker (like Paul Scholes has done at Manchester United).
You see, I was watching England play last night, but I was too busy thinking of how a Manchester United player could improve his football ability. I do think the national team is very important, and I’d like to see England do well. I have to admit that I’d enjoy England’s performances even more if it’s the Manchester United players who are playing starring roles for their country.
