Rooney is staying at Manchester United

(I know… ANOTHER post about Wayne Rooney!!! This is what football does to us fans!)

From manutd.com:

“Wayne Rooney has agreed a new 5 year contract to stay at Manchester United until at least June 2015. The agreement follows intensive discussions between the Club and the player’s representatives and means that by the end of his contract Wayne will have been a Manchester United player for 11 years.”

Here are some extracts from the statement:

Sir Alex Ferguson: “I’m pleased he has accepted the challenge to guide the younger players and establish himself as one of United’s great players. It shows character and belief in what we stand for.

“I’m sure everyone involved with the Club will now get behind Wayne and show him the support he needs to produce the performances we know he is capable of.”

Wayne Rooney: “I’m signing a new deal in the absolute belief that the management, coaching staff, board and owners are totally committed to making sure United maintains its proud winning history – which is the reason I joined the Club in the first place.

“I’m sure the fans over the last week have felt let down by what they’ve read and seen.  But my position was from concern over the future.  The fans have been brilliant with me since I arrived and it’s up to me through my performances to win them over again.”

Moja: “I wonder how much ‘ambition’ Manchester United are paying Rooney every week…. Seriously, though, this was all about money. Rooney said he was concerned about the club’s ‘future’. Now that his agent has negotiated a new deal, Rooney’s future, sorry, I meant the club’s future is now secure. 😉

Rio Ferdinand tweeted that today was a good day, and now we know why. I hope this gives the club a huge lift, and I hope we use this news to improve our performances this season.

Rooney has now apologised to Sir Alex Ferguson and to other Manchester United football players. I’m sure the fans are waiting for their own apology too.”

Rooney saga timeline:

1) News gets leaked that Rooney is thinking of leaving. Man Utd 0 – 0 Rooney.

2) Sir Alex Ferguson releases his statement. Man Utd 1 – 0 Rooney.

3) Wayne Rooney release his statement. Man Utd 2 – 0 Rooney.

4) Fans and other managers criticise Rooney. Man Utd 3 – 0 Rooney.

5) Rooney signs new deal, gets the money he wants. Man Utd 4 – 2 Rooney.

I wonder how Manchester City feel. It looks like Rooney and his agents were using them as a way to increase his new wage package at United. More importantly, I wonder how Uncle Woy feels now that Liverpool’s relegation saga will soon be back in the headlines! 🙂

Rooney wants £150,000 a week AFTER tax?

From Goal.com’s website:

“The new contract offered by Manchester United to Wayne Rooney was only a £20,000-a-week improvement on his current basic salary, Goal.com UK can reveal.

Sir Alex Ferguson claimed that United had prepared “the best terms possible for any player in the country” but it is understood that the deal on the table was a long way short of the top earners at Manchester City.”

I can understand why a person would want to move somewhere else to earn more money. However, footballers earn a lot of money already. The club is still having meetings with Rooney’s agent, so they may still be able to reach a deal.

I hope both sides stop releasing statements and counter-statements against each other. In the long-run, these kind of statements can affect our performances on the pitch.

It will be interesting to see which player Sir Alex Ferguson signs next. Will he want to prove to Rooney and the fans that Manchester United can still afford to pay for the best football players in the world?

Ferguson responds to Rooney

Manchester United played against Bursaspor in the Champion’s League tonight. The match was played at Old Trafford, and we won it 1-0; Nani scored the goal and it was a really good strike. 🙂

After the match, Sir Alex Ferguson was asked for his reaction to Wayne Rooney’s statement. This is what he said:

“I haven’t read Wayne Rooney’s statement, but we’ll have a view on it tomorrow and probably put it to bed tomorrow. As I said, the door is open. We keep good players, particularly when they are that young. He wants assurances? Have I won 30 trophies or what?!”

Ferguson also came out with his own version of “the grass is always greener on the other side”:

“Sometimes you look in a field and see a cow,” he said. “You think it is a better cow than the one you see in your field. It never really works out that way. Some players like to think the world is better somewhere else. It never really works.”

When I first read Rooney’s statement, I was worried about the state of our club. However, I’ve thought about it some more, and I now feel that he’s insulted his manager and his teammates.

We were an ambitious club before he joined us and we will still be an ambitious club after he has gone. Rooney is talking as if we’ve failed to qualify for the Champion League and are currently battling against relegation. Someone should remind him that we won the Premier League title in 2009. Idiot! 👿

Wayne Rooney confirms departure

Here is Wayne Rooney’s statement in full:

“I was interested to hear what Sir Alex had to say yesterday and surprised by some of it. It is absolutely true that my agent and I have had meetings with the club about a new contract.

During those meetings in August, I asked for assurances about the continued ability for the club to attract the top players in the world. I never had anything but complete respect for Manchester United. How could I not have done given it’s fantastic history and the past 6 years I’ve been a part of.

For me it’s always about wining trophies which the club has always done under Sir Alex Ferguson. Because of that the questions I asked were justified. However, when I met with David Gill last week, he didn’t give me any assurances I was seeking about the future squad. I then told him I wouldn’t be signing a new contract.

Despite recent difficulties, I will always owe Sir Alex Ferguson a huge debt. He is a great manager and mentor who helped and supported me from the day he signed me from Everton when I was just 18. For Manchester United’s sake I wish he could go on forever because he is a one-off and a genius.”

Here’s my summary of Wayne Rooney’s statement:

“I want to earn A LOT more money, and Manchester United are not ‘ambitious’ enough to pay me what I want.”

Wayne Rooney is leaving Man United

It’s official – Wayne Rooney has decided to leave Manchester United.

Two days ago, I mentioned how lots of sports journalists were excitedly tweeting that Wayne Rooney wasn’t going to sign a new contract. Check out the extraordinary statement given by Sir Alex Ferguson in today’s press conference at Old Trafford.

Sir Alex Ferguson looks sad and disappointed. I’ve never seen him get so unhappy about a player leaving our club before. He’s denied having any arguments with Rooney and has clarified the ankle injury situation. A lot of people online (well, journalists and Lord Sugar, really) were impressed with what Ferguson had to say.

At the moment, Ferguson and Manchester United look like the victims while Wayne Rooney (and his agent Paul Stretford) look like the villains. I wonder how they are going to respond.

One thing you’ve got to admit about the whole saga is that this is what makes being a fan of football fan so fun. Crazy things are happening every season; it’s like we’re watching a soap opera. Let’s take a look at what’s happened so far this season:

01. Manchester City spent £126m on 6 players in the summer.

02. Manchester City gave Yaya Toure a contract worth £220,000 a week.

03. Martin O’Neil resigned as manager of Aston Villa.

04. Manchester United signed a former homeless player (Bebe).

05. Wigan lost 4-0 to Blackpool and 6-0 to Chelsea – in their own stadium!

06. Hicks and Gillett took the Liverpool board to court.

07. Hicks and Gillett eventually let go of Liverpool.

08. Liverpool lost to Northampton in the Carling Cup!

09. Liverpool slipped to 19th in the Premier League table!

10. Players have been condemned for too much dangerous tackling.

11. Danny Murphy named managers who apparently encouraged bad tackling.

12. Blackpool have played wonderful, attacking football.

13. West Brom have played wonderful, attacking football.

14. Manchester United keep dropping two goal leads. 😡

15. Wayne Rooney is dropped against Everton.

16. Sir Alex Ferguson confirms Rooney wants to leave Man United.

We’re only two months into the new season, and so many things have already happened. I’m looking forward to lots of other crazy things happening before the end of the season.
